Here a look back at the beginning.
Paul Zelisko and Roger Davis were both active members with Fox River Valley HRC, which at the time held its meetings and training sessions in Elgin, Ill. Both Paul and Roger lived near the Illinois-Wisconsin border and because of the long drive each week to and from Elgin for training and meetings, they decided to start a new club using Bong Recreation Area as their central training site. After obtaining approval from Hunting Retriever Clubs, Inc in March, 1990, Paul and Roger contacted many hunt clubs and dog clubs to get the word out about their new club. On June 22nd, 1990, the initial membership meeting was held at Bong. The meeting room at the Bong conference center was “standing room only”. Paul and Roger realized there was plenty of interest in the new club and WISILL HRC (Pronounced Whistle) was off and running. Initially, Paul and Roger were the training coordinators with some non-member professional trainers assisting at times. As the club grew in numbers, it also grew in knowlege and experience. After a few years, Paul and Roger were able to rely on other WISILL members to help coordinate the training sessions. Paul and Roger no longer had to be the “Salesmen” selling the HRC philosophy, as the new members did all of the selling necessary while experiencing unbelievable growth in their own training abilities. The strength and benefit of HRC, and especially within WISILL HRC, is that the experienced members continue to provide leadership and guidance, helping each member learn more about training their hunting retriever(s). Never forget where you started as there are always those who are seeking help to achieve their goals, goals they can’t even imagine today. Testimonial to the great club WISILL isI just want to tell you that I was out at Bong the other night and ran in to 3 guys who made my first alone trip there a great experience. All 3 came over to my truck and ask me to join them..
Not one made me feel out of place. They were all very helpful and totally fulfilled the pledge your club made that the members would always help new people.
They went above and beyond in making and old lady feel at home
